The proposed renovation/expansion is the result of a more than two-year process beginning with a detailed inventory of the spaces needed to accomplish the desired goal of attracting all of Amherst’s residents to the Library, especially those not adequately served by the present building. This process, begun by staff, but overseen by a Feasibility Committee and its Design Subcommittee, with multiple opportunities for input by the public, resulted in a Program that is as detailed as prescribing the quantity of shelf space, the numbers of seats, workstations, offices, and other furnishings for each of the functions of the Library. The Program was then provided to the project’s architects, whose professional skills confirmed the obvious: it could not be accomplished within the footprint of the present building.
